25 Free Gardening Courses
Most of us felt like gardeners a few years ago when we planted a seed packet in a sunny windowsill. Then the basil died, the tomatoes split, and the soil became something that no one could explain. If this sounds like you, you don’t need to attend a pricey class to correct this. The right teacher is needed and many are offering their expertise for free.
This is a compilation of 25 free gardening courses and other learning resources from Alison, OpenLearn, the Royal Horticultural Society, Garden Organic, BBC Gardeners’ World and four University extension programs. Some are structured courses with a clear beginning and end, while others are extensive libraries of guides you can turn to when you need help with a specific gardening problem.
Gardening for beginners basics, horticulture courses, explaining the science, vegetable and kitchen gardening walkthroughs, ideas for gardening in the city with tiny spaces, lessons on garden design, organic gardening, and much about soil, compost, and plant propagation. You don’t need a certificate to learn from these resources. Where certificates are available, they may require an additional fee, but completing one is entirely optional.
There’s one disclaimer before you begin: Some links lead to a topic page (or hub) rather than just one lesson, so you may need to peruse for a minute after you arrive. So I will tell you when that’s the case.
Note: Course availability, certificates, badges and paid add-ons are subject to change on these platforms very frequently. Some have no entry or exit fees. Some provide free learning content and then take payment for the exam or a hard copy certificate. Below all the entries are marked as to which is which but always checks on the platform before investing their time in it.
