25 Free AngularJS Courses Online

25 Free AngularJS Courses Online

You’ve been assigned to an old project and discovered that there are ng-repeat and $scope variables staring back at you in an open file, right? AngularJS tutorial isn’t the framework that anybody’s creating new products with anymore, but it’s still quietly crawling around in thousands of internal tools, enterprise dashboards and legacy systems where somebody, somewhere, has to maintain those systems. That someone could be YOU!

This is a selection of 25 free AngularJS courses online for you, as well as a collection of free AngularJS courses, from beginner tutorials to in-depth, technical resources on directives, services and testing. There are tutorials of these, which can be followed on a weekend. Others are reference documents which you’ll be opening in a tab for months. Some are platforms where free content is available, but may change over time; we’re also specifically noting it as free content, not pretending that when it isn’t, it is.

We’re not lying to you about one thing: not all of the resources here offer a certificate, but that’s okay. Most people learning AngularJS today don’t do so for the sake of the LinkedIn badge. If they are doing it for an understanding or maintenance of an existing application, then a good tutorial on working examples is more valuable than a $100 examination at the end of it. We have also made every effort to be honest about resources that are truly free as opposed to those that have some free content but ultimately lead you to a paywall just before the content you actually need, which is most frustrating.

If you’re a student who’s never learn AngularJS online from the ground up, or a bootcamp attendee looking to fill in some extra content, or perhaps someone using AngularJS but has just been handed a legacy project and need to catch up quickly, there’s something in this list that will benefit you. We have grouped the 25 resources from the easiest tutorials at the top to the more advanced and intermediate at the bottom; if you are already familiar with some of this material, you may want to take a quick look at the rest. If you are familiar with directives and controllers, go to the routing and testing or dependency injection sections, near the bottom.

Just a heads up: AngularJS 1.x & modern Angular (2+, new) are two distinct frameworks with a common part of a name. Some of these sites are available for both – we’ve indicated them as such, but if you do need to check whether you are reading AngularJS-specific content or content that is geared towards the newer Angular-based framework. More novices than you think will get that mix up.

Note: Course availability, certificates, badges and paid add-ons are subject to change on these platforms very frequently. Some have no entry or exit fees. Some provide free learning content and then take payment for the exam or a hard copy certificate. Below all the entries are marked as to which is which but always checks on the platform before investing their time in it.

1. AngularJS Tutorial by W3Schools

  • Provider: W3Schools
  • Level: Beginner
  • Cost: Free
  • Certificate: Paid

W3Schools has established a reputation for making programming concepts easy to understand, and this is no different with this easy-to-follow AngularJS tutorial for beginners. It begins from the absolute ground up and gradually builds up the concepts that you really need to know about: expressions, modules, directives, models, two-way data binding, controllers, scopes, filters, services, HTTP calls, forms, validation and routing.

This one sticks because of the interaction. All examples are modifiable and can be executed directly within the browser; you don’t have to follow along and read about one directive you can break and then fix and watch the results. While W3Schools is not intended for those who are not familiar with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, it is assumed that you have some basic understanding of the code and are able to walk in. The lessons are free and if one wants to receive a certificate at the end, it is an extra fee.

Ideal for: Knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript (or having worked with them in the past) and those looking to rapidly ramp up on an existing AngularJS project.

If you are working through this one, take care not to ignore the filters and services sections as it doesn’t seem as cool as directives. The two topics are always mentioned in real AngularJS projects and mastering them at the beginning will save you a lot of confusion later.

2. AngularJS Official Tutorial

  • Provider: AngularJS Documentation
  • Level: Beginner
  • Cost: Free

It’s good to go to the source. The official AngularJS tutorial is the original tutorial that was released with AngularJS, which will take you on a step-by-step journey to creating a real application using AngularJS, and introduce you to concepts that were integral to the design of AngularJS.

It’s a direct output of the AngularJS project, and that’s what gives it a certain authority compared, for instance, with tutorials found on third-party sites; especially when it comes to getting the right information on how the framework was supposed to be used. While explaining the way, AngularJS is considered as a structural framework to create dynamic web applications, with a discussion of templates, data binding and dependency injection.

There’s one caveat: AngularJS is now officially at EOL, so use what you read here as a way to learn how to work with legacy systems, and not as a blueprint for new development.

Best for: Developers who are looking for an explanation of the framework from those that helped create it, particularly if developers have an existing AngularJS codebase.

The tutorial is written in a series of steps, which build on each other — it is best to type the code yourself, instead of simply reading through it. This will take a little longer than some of the other third party solutions, but the resulting mental model of how AngularJS pieces work is much more clear.

3. AngularJS Developer Guide

  • Provider: AngularJS Documentation
  • Level: Beginner to Intermediate
  • Cost: Free

This is not so much a course as a companion to return to. The AngularJS Developer Guide is a technical reference that is packed with information on how AngularJS applications actually work under the hood. You don’t have to take one straight route, but you can jump around between the templates, the application structure, the directives, the dependency injection, the services, and testing as per your needs on that day.

Once you’ve mastered the basics, it’s easy to go deeper into the tutorial, seed project and other community resources given by the guide. Most developers discover it when they’ve completed a beginner tutorial and are beginning to come across particular concepts that they need explained in greater detail.

Best for: Developers with basic knowledge of JavaScript who are looking for a more technical and in-depth explanation of the structure of AngularJS.

Read this bookmark and don’t go through it. Its true worth becomes apparent after a month or so, when you come across a particular issue in a real project, and need a technical and accurate explanation, not a basic introduction.

4. AngularJS Online Training by TutorialsPoint

  • Provider: TutorialsPoint
  • Level: Beginner
  • Cost: Free learning resources

At TutorialsPoint, AngularJS training is designed for software professionals who are looking for a no-frills explanation of AngularJS instead of a heavily produced video course. It introduces the primary components of AngularJS and demonstrates a series of examples that illustrate how it helps create responsive, single page applications.

It will help if you have some experience of working with JavaScript and some HTML, CSS and AJAX skills will be beneficial but not essential. The training takes you through architecture, modules, controllers, directives, expressions, data binding, services and forms, and provides you with a broad overview of the framework instead of a deep dive of a small portion.

Ideal for: Any JavaScript developer or student seeking an easy-to-understand, non-gimmicky introduction that doesn’t include a lot of fluff.

The pace is more in line with those who already have some programming experience, and want plainly to understand the concepts behind AngularJS, rather than to be entertained by additional motivational padding between the concepts.

5. AngularJS Tutorial by GeeksforGeeks

  • Provider: GeeksforGeeks
  • Level: Beginner to Intermediate
  • Cost: Free

GeeksforGeeks provides a dedicated AngularJS tutorial covering the fundamentals of AngularJS 1.x. The tutorial introduces AngularJS architecture and explains important concepts including modules, controllers, $scope, data binding, directives, filters, expressions, services, forms and routing.

It also covers AngularJS $http and API communication, testing and other practical concepts used when working with AngularJS applications. Learners should note that GeeksforGeeks also publishes content about modern Angular, so it is important to follow the AngularJS-specific material.

6. AngularJS Examples and Reference by W3Schools

  • Provider: W3Schools
  • Level: Beginner to Intermediate
  • Cost: Free

The quickest way to get a grasp of a concept is to see it in action rather than read a paragraph about it. W3Schools created the entire library of examples on AngularJS, ranging from directives to expressions, controllers, services, forms, HTTP requests and routing.

Each example can be edited directly in the browser, allowing you to make changes, and instantly see the results without creating a local development environment. This was a good resource in conjunction with directives and filters on W3Schools.

Ideal for: Hands on learners, who prefer to play with real, working AngularJS code, rather than long explanations.

This is a useful exercise to intentionally break each example prior to fixing it. Try out some changes in a directive, delete a binding, comment out a controller function and see what happens. You will learn more from breaking something, and fixing it than from reading working code that will never fail.

7. AngularJS API Reference

  • Provider: AngularJS Documentation
  • Level: Intermediate
  • Cost: Free

This is not a tutorial in the traditional sense, but documentation and it’s essential as soon as you begin to actually write and debug AngularJS code. The official API Reference documents all the modules and functions of the framework in detail, including all core modules such as ng, ngRoute, ngAnimate, ngResource, ngCookies, ngTouch and ngSanitize.

Don’t forget to bookmark this one. You will not read it from front to back, but once you get stuck on a particular service trying to understand what it does and/or what it returns, or stuck on a method trying to understand its behavior, this is where the true answers lie.

Ideal for: Developers who have basic knowledge of AngularJS and are looking for detailed, accurate and authoritative technical information while creating or fixing something.

After a while, you’ll feel at ease in such a book, and debugging an unfamiliar AngularJS codebase will become much less stressful. You don’t have to try to figure out what a built-in service does, look it up, and you’ll see what parameters it takes and what it returns.

9. AngularJS Material: Introduction and Getting Started

  • Provider: AngularJS Material
  • Level: Beginner to Intermediate
  • Cost: Free

This getting started guide is worth your while if you are taking over a project that uses AngularJS Material, a UI component library created specifically for AngularJS. The official site provides a free 30 minute introductory tutorial video as well as examples and setup instructions.

You’ll learn how to apply Material Design concepts to AngularJS components and the basics of setting up, laying out, styling and animating with Material Design. Some things to note: AngularJS Material is also EOL, which makes this a maintenance resource, not a product to come up with something new.

Suitable for: Developers working on a current application using AngularJS and who have already been using Material Design components.

If you don’t currently have a project that involves AngularJS Material, that’s okay, but it’s worth quickly reading this resource just so you become familiar with the pattern when you see it elsewhere. This combination was the foundation of plenty of mid 2010s internal enterprise applications.

21. AngularJS Directives Tutorial

  • Provider: TutorialEdge
  • Level: Intermediate
  • Cost: Free

What is this? Pre-assessment for the practice exam is required, and a pre-arranged time is needed for the exam to be administered.

Directives are certainly the thing that makes AngularJS feel like Angular JS, so it’s no good to have a 2-paragraph tutorial about them. This one from TutorialEdge does just that, taking you through the process of creating a custom directive from scratch instead of relying on the built-in directives such as ng-repeat. It’s one of the larger, though not flashy, series on AngularJS written by developer Elliot Forbes, it doesn’t have to be the most exciting series, it just has to be good, and it is, with working code that you can copy, run, break on purpose and see what happens.

22. AngularJS Factory Tutorial

  • Provider: TutorialEdge
  • Level: Intermediate
  • Cost: Free

Once you’ve got controllers and directives under your belt, factories and dependency injection are the next wall most people hit, mostly because a lot of tutorials explain the concept without ever showing you why it matters in practice. This tutorial fixes that by having you actually build a factory service and inject it somewhere useful, so the abstract idea of “sharing logic across your app” turns into something you’ve physically typed out and watched work. It’s concise, doesn’t pad itself out, and assumes you already know the AngularJS basics, which makes it a good second-stage resource rather than a first one.

23. AngularJS Template Route Provider Tutorial

  • Provider: TutorialEdge
  • Level: Intermediate
  • Cost: Free

Routing is one of those topics that sounds simple until you’re staring at your first $routeProvider config and nothing renders, so a tutorial that actually walks through the setup step by step earns its place here. This one does that, showing how templates get wired to routes and how navigation works without a full page reload, which is the whole point of a single-page app in the first place. It’s practical rather than theoretical, the kind of thing you’d keep open in a second tab while you’re setting up routing on your own project for the first time.

24. AngularJS for Test-Driven Development

  • Provider: GitHub (Tuts+ source files)
  • Level: Intermediate
  • Cost: Free

Testing is the part of AngularJS most tutorials mention once and then never touch again, which is exactly why this one is worth digging out. It’s the source repository for a real Tuts+ course built around Karma, Protractor, Mocha, and Chai, complete with actual config files and a working address-book demo app to test against. Instead of just reading about what unit testing is supposed to do, you clone the repo, run the setup commands, and watch tests pass and fail in real time. It’s a bit more hands-on setup than a typical article, but that’s kind of the point.

25. Interacting With RESTful APIs Using $http in AngularJS

  • Provider: TutorialEdge
  • Level: Intermediate
  • Cost: Free

Almost nothing in a real AngularJS app exists in isolation from a backend, so eventually you need to actually understand $http, not just recognize it in someone else’s code. This tutorial walks through making GET and POST requests, handling the responses, and hooking that data into your app, using a simple enough example that you can follow along without getting lost in an unrelated setup. It’s the kind of resource you come back to a few times while wiring up your first real API call, rather than something you read once and file away.
